My Office Evolution

When translation work was slow, I played with computers, built new machines for friends and family, set up my home network...

Computers in general, different operating systems fascinated me. Sometimes, I had up to five different operating systems on my machine (OS2, 3.1, NT 4, Windows 95 RUS, Windows 98 SE). I loved playing with them, saw them as free (or near free) toys that I can break at will, but they didn't complain. Reformat, reinstall is all they asked for. And I did that, sometimes till dawn.

I remember happiness I experienced when next beta version of Netscape was released... because it was another free toy to play with. Or struggle, when it came to Cyrillic encodings.

Then I discovered Macintosh, bought an old machine for $300 and fell in love with it. It was so... different! And beautifull.

My baby Maria meanwhile grew into an elephant...

(place reserved for a picture of my office with a two-monitor setup).
Power G4 Cube impressed me with its futuristic looks and nearly total quietness. (That's when the Windows machine was exiled to the garage to make the office absolutely quiet).

It's hard to believe that this 22" Cinema Display cost $5,000.00. Plus tax. Today's monitors cost five time less and arguably have a better picture...
